Ordering Wine On Your First Date
So there you are you’ve been busy on your favorite internet dating site and after months of chatting you are going out on your first date. You have decided to make your first date a trip to a local restaurant for a romantic dinner. Here is the problem for most guys, you know what to order whether it be dessert, starter or the main course, no problem! What concerns you is what wine to order and you don’t want to appear like you don’t know what you are doing nor do you want to break the bank.
First things first being honesty is always best and if you are intimidated by selecting a wine to have with dinner ask her. If you are like me however you don’t want to do that and maybe you are even interested in learning more about wine. If you are the later here are some tips to picking out a good wine.
Practice as they say makes perfect and the good news is all this requires is drinking more wine. You need to familiarize yourself with the wine that you like, what country and grape varietal best suits your pallet. After you have found the wine that you prefer the taste of ask yourself what you will most likely be eating? While predicting the future isn’t all that easy, if you are going to a steakhouse or an Italian restaurant you might have a good idea as to what you’ll be eating. Big wines go with big food and so on, pairing wine and food can get complicated but it doesn’t have to.
Most good restaurants luckily have web sites and the many now include the menu’s and their respective wine lists. This is hands down the best thing to ever happen to all of us intimidated by a wine list. Now you have all the time in the world to find the wine that you like and more importantly you can pick a reasonably priced wine with confidence ahead of time.
When it comes to price you should never pay more than double the price you would pay at a wine store. 100% markup seems high but is normal, anything more and they’re gouging you! A good waiter or sommelier should have no problem telling what wines they recommend and should never try and sell you the expensive stuff until they know you are looking in that range.
Just remember the best wine is always the wine you like and can afford. The good news for us guys that don’t like spending a huge amount of money on wine – the more you spend has nothing to do with how good it will taste. I am a wine connoisseur and drink wine 5 plus days a week, I can honestly tell you some of the best wines I have ever had has been under $20 and some under $15 a bottle.
Plan ahead, relax and most of all remember that wine always tastes better with good company so focus as much time on the company as you do picking the wine and you’ll end up winning!
