If you tell someone – just about anyone – that your hobbies include wine appreciation, you can almost guarantee that the response will be a hearty laugh and some approximation of the words "Yeah, I appreciate wine too!" along with some none-too-subtle remarks hinting at their enjoyment of the feeling of inebriation. That is just the way things are. But wine tasting is a genuine pursuit for people who actually enjoy the subtleties of this wonderful creation, and judging by the number of wine tasting courses in Sydney it is one that is growing in popularity.

Although you will find any number of people who are not thrilled by the idea of taking wine into your mouth but not being allowed to swallow it, the truth of the matter is that to really appreciate the diverse flavors available to a wine drinker it will not help if your perceptions are pulled off course by the effects of alcohol. And there are many great different flavors there. Experienced wine tasters will detect things in a glass of wine that may, to the outsider, suggest that they are a little bit pretentious and eccentric. It is unquestionable, however, that those flavors can be detected if you have a keen nose.

Among the more common flavors that turn up in a glass of white wine will be the likes of vanilla, peach and lemon, but those really just scratch the surface of what some tasters detect in a good white wine. Although you might feel that the only flavor appropriate to a glass of wine would be grapes, the simple fact is that after the process the grapes go through to get into a wine bottle, it is hardly surprising that there are a few other notes that will turn up from time to time.

Some of the more surprising ones that turn up with impressive regularity are smoke, mown grass and even petrol and that is just when speaking of white wine. When drinking a red wine, although flavors we are told to look out for generally include fruits, it is not all that uncommon to hear the flavors in there referred to as rubber, velvet and even blood – an idea which is likely to scare wine novices away more than it will make them curious about the taste that they are about to experience.

There are many good wine tasting courses in Sydney if you know where to look. The Internet, as ever, should be your first port of call as it is there that you will find the widest range of courses and a good deal of contact information for the people and places running the course. It is a good idea to call before attending, in order to get an idea of the kind of crowd that attends a wine tasting course. If you are interested in the fun side of things, turning up to a very solemn course peopled with a grouping who takes it very seriously would not be taken in the spirit you might hope for.

If you’re considering getting your feet wet by joining wine tasting tours, you are not alone. Ever since the release of the movie "Sideways" in 2004, about two men approaching middle age who decide to embark on a journey through California wine country, have wine tasting tours gained in popularity. Once reserved for the wealthy or the elite, or just those who thought they were, these tours are now more and more common for anyone who is either a wine lover or just wants to learn more about this wonderful beverage.

What should a newcomer to wine tasting know about these wonderful excursions? What can you expect and how should you plan so that you can get the most enjoyment from them?

One thing to remember is that there are really two types of wine tasting tours – the type that is already organized by someone else, and one you decide to go on by yourself. There are many limousines and car services that can be arranged for tasting tours that you decide to try on your own, and it’s important that you use one of these services for such a tour. The last thing you want to do is get behind the wheel of a car after having sampled several glasses of wine!

For those that are just starting out, it might be recommended that you try some wine tasting tours that are organized by a professional. This way there will be no surprises, and your day will be planned out for you, leaving nothing to chance.

Where and When You Leave

Since most people interested in wine tours don’t actually live in wine country, the best tours often arrange for pickup service at nearby hotels. If they are not scheduled to stop at the hotel where you will be staying, you can simply alert your host or organizer that you will be meeting the group in the lobby of whatever hotel is closest. This way they know to expect you and won’t think they need to ring your room.

Usually the group starts out in mid-morning since wine tasting are typically all day affairs, and there is some driving that needs to be done between vineyards.

How Much Wine is There?

Most vineyards along wine tasting tours offer 4 to 6 one-ounce samplers of their wines, and you choose which you would like to try. One ounce may not seem like much, but most people who enjoy wine tasting tours will tell you that it really begins to add up as the day goes along, again no driving while drinking!

Private Tours

If you don’t want to organize your own wine tasting tours but don’t care to go with a group, or have certain vineyards you’d like to visit, you can usually arrange private tours with most companies and they will help map out your itinerary, reserve the vehicle, pick you up, and so on. These types of wine tasting tours typically don’t cost much more than group tours, which are usually well under a hundred dollars per person.

To some people throwing a dinner or cocktail party comes naturally. To others, hosting an event can be more of a challenge. If you tend to fall in the second camp, but would really love to host a successful party, you should most definitely start with a kosher wine tasting. Cocktail parties and dinner parties require serious menu planning and may be a tad overwhelming for someone who is inexperienced in planning an event of that scale. If you’d like to learn how to throw your own successful, kosher wine tasting, check out this brief guide.

1) Compile the guest list and make some invitations. There are tons of great places online that can give you cool, creative invitation templates. If you’re feeling especially crafty, you can print them by hand on some nice cardstock and decorate them as you’d like. It’s best to send out the invites a week, maybe two weeks, in advance. If you send it out too early, some people may put it on the calendar and forget about it. If you send it too late, you run the risk of the guests having prior engagements.

2) Write a list of what types of kosher wines you’d like at your tasting. You should go for variety and have a nice balance of white, red, and blush. Try to buy bottles of kosher wine that aren’t typically available at your nearby liquor store, something that you can be sure not many of people have tried. In order to get the best selection, you should probably take your search to a kosher wine store on the internet. At online kosher wine stores, you can get everything from an Australian Shiraz, to a Merlot from Israel, to good old Manischewitz wine. In addition to wine, you should have soda and coffee on hand for those looking for a little pick me up.

3) Make sure you have enough stem ware. You should have enough glasses ready for everyone and they should be polished to shine with no water spots or smudges. In addition to wine glasses, many wine connoisseurs like using wine carafes to aerate the wine and bring out the flavor after the bottle has been opened. These are always a good idea, just to have on hand for someone who prefers their reds be aerated.

4) Brief yourself on some information about your selections and maybe right them down. That way when everyone tastes their samples, you can seem like the knowledgeable host and offer all kinds of helpful facts and figures about the varietals.

5) Plan a light menu of easy snacks that go well with wines. Think about things that would pair well with your kosher wine selections and that are, of course, kosher. For whites think of something light and easy for reds think of something with meat. All in all, your kosher wine tasting is sure to be a success if you follow this guide and remember to have fun!

The wines of Abruzzo, Italy, can offer more than just wine for your next wine tasting party. By offering your guests a little history on the legendary winemaking region of the wines you feature, you provide more than a great tasting wine. You can complement the taste as your guests can picture the vineyards where the wine originated. The Abruzzo region of Italy has a vivid ancient past, both in history and winemaking. This article looks at this region, including Scarpone, one of the most prized wineries of the area, providing some information you can share at your next wine tasting party.

Abruzzo

Abruzzo has its fair share of art and architecture throughout its hill towns and mountain villages, but the Apennine mountains dominate the region, taking up two thirds of the area and attracting hikers and skiers to resorts. The vast Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo is one of Europe’s most important nature preserves.

Descendants of various hill tribes who settled the region in the Bronze Age, the Abruzzesi were difficult to unite, although the Greeks, Romans, Swabians, Aragonese, and Bourbons all tried. Before the advent of modern transportation, the inhabitants were isolated in hill towns and villages clinging to the sides of mountains. After the 12th Century, the Abruzzesi were ruled by a succession of dynasties based in Naples to the south. As a result, their diet, speech, and customs are more similar to their southern neighbors than to their neighbors to the north or west.

The hills in the region are highly favorable for grapevines. The two classified wines are Trebbiano and Montepulciano, not to be confused with the town of that name in Toscana, where Vino Nobile is made. When grown on the lower hills, Montepulciano has an irresistible character, full bodied and smooth with the capacity to age. In the higher areas, the vines produce a lighter version, Ceraruolo, which is a sturdy, cherry-colored rose. The white Trebbiano d’Abruzzo has been described as a phantom vine since its origins are unclear. At its best, the wine can develop a Burgundy-like complexity after four or five years of aging.

Scarpone

The small estate of Lorenzo Scarpone is located in Abruzzo in the Colline Teramane zone named after the nearby mountain town of Teramo and thought to produce the finest wine in the Abruzzo region from the native Montepulciano grape. It is the first and only zone in the Aburzzo to be given the Italian government’s highest quality ranking of DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata E Garantita).

Owner Lorenzo Scarpone is well known in the United States among Italian wine lovers for his Italian wine import company, Villa Italia, founded in 1989. Villa Italia’s wines have received outstanding reviews from Italy’s leading wine journal Gambero Rosso, wine club associations, and from Wine spectators, Robert Parker and Stephen Tanzer.

Lorenzo, an active member of the Slow Food Organization, founded the first convivium in the United States in San Francisco where he resides with his family. Born and raised in the same area where his wine estate is located, Lorenzo grows only the native Montepulciano grape. Highly respected Loriano di Sabatino is the winemaker and the wines have gained critical acclaim in the short time that the estate has released them.

The fine wines of Scarpone as well as other wineries within the Abruzzo winemaking region of Italy are a favorite of many wine club associations as they produce robust wines with grapes possessing a vivid past that is sure to interest and intrigue your guests.

Your guests will enjoy your next wine tasting event all the more if you provide a look at the winery producing the wine you serve. As you pour the wine, take the moment to share a story about the winery and the region so your guests can appreciate not only the distinctive taste produced by different wineries, but can also picture the area and history. Your guests will welcome the education you provide them with in addition to the wine. This article looks at the Piemonte region of Italy and three of the fine wineries that call this area home.

The Piemonte Region Of Italy

Almost half of Piemonte, which means "foot of the mountain," lies in the great arc of the Alps and the Apennines from which the Po River flows east through its broad valley to the Adriatic Sea. Bordering Switzerland and France, Piemonte and the smaller Valle d’Aosta to the north were part of the French-speaking principality of Savoy between the 11th and 18th Centuries. They played a key role in the Risorgimento, the movement that united Italy under a Savoy king in 1859.

Famous ski resorts and the wild Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso draw visitors to the majestic mountains in the north while in the south, vine covered hills around Barolo and vast fields of grain and rice in the Po Valley continue a rich agricultural tradition. Torino, the region’s capital, is a crowded industrial city home to the Fiat car company, but it also offers Baroque buildings, palazzo, and museums, including a world-renowned museum housing an Egyptian collection gathered during the Napoleonic Wars.

The ancient Liguri tribes who dominated the region probably first cultivated the wild vines of the Apennines, but they learned winemaking from the Greeks around 600 B.C. The Celtic Taurini, who gave their name to Torino, also grew vines in the region. Although the Romans planted vines, they didn’t favor the wines. Finally in the 19th Century, the wines of Piemonte gained distinction when the Savoy and others began to use French methods. Today, Piemonte has 52 DOC and DOCG zones, more than any other region.

Cascina Chicco Winery

Owned by the Faccenda family and located in the Roero district of Piemonte, Italy, Cascina Chicco features the best planting sites with Nebbiolo, the noble grape of Piemonte, which reaches its highest expression in the Barberesco and Barolo appellations. Although farmers have grown grapes in the Roero district since ancient times, it only received DOC status in 1990 and each year it gains more respect for its wines. Cascina Chicco crafts fruity, approachable wines a favorite of many Italian wine clubs, including white Arneis, Nebbiolo d’Alba, Roero, Barbera d’Alba, Favorita, and Brachetto. They receive the highest award possible from the wine guide, Gambera Rosso, for their Barbera d’Alba Bric Loira, Nebiolo d’Alba Mompissano and the dessert wine Arcass Passito.

Azienda Agricola Icardi Winery

Perched on the Alba hills in Castiglione Tinella of the Piemonte region of Italy between the famous viticultural appellations, the Langhe and Monferrrato, Azienda Agricola Icardi is a family winery. Azienda Agricola Icardi has a reputation for making distinctively drinkable wines upon release that embody both an international style and old-world character. The family has grown grapes in the area since 1914, but in the early 1960s, Piereno Icardi chose to make his own wine instead of selling his fruit to others. After almost 50 years, Pierino Icardi is still in charge today and his wines remain a favorite of Italian wine clubs worldwide.

Quinto Chionetti Winery

Gambero Rosso calls Quinto Chionetti the "grand old man of Dogliani," a zone just a few kilometers south of Alba known for Dolcetto wines with extraordinary structure and strength. Quinto’s grandfather founded the 14-hectare estate in 1918 and over time, the family has produced some of the greatest Dolcetto in Italy. The family makes only this one varietal, but from three different vineyards, Briccolero, Vigna la Costa, and San Luigi.

You are interested in learning about wine tasting. You have many friends who have raved about different wines. Where do you start? Quite simply, you start with the first glass.

Get a group of friends together and venture out wine tasting. Temecula Valley offers more than 30 wineries. Many of them have award winning wines.

Wine tasting is an experience. Here are a few easy steps to make enhance your wine tasting adventure.

Tasting wine is about knowing the wine. Keep in mind that wine has a unique taste, and each wine has its very own characteristics. Wine can be very rich and complex, and in order to fully appreciate it, you need to taste it properly. The true essence of wine tasting is to be able to identify the wine and get its true flavor. Every wine is different in flavor.

The basics of wine tasting are easy. You don’t need any formal training and anyone can enjoy the experience. Always make sure that you have room temperature water, in order to cleanse your pallet in between tasting each wine.

Wine should be served in a stem glass. This way, you can hold the glass by the stem, while wine tasting. You want to avoid holding the glass by the palm of your hand. Oftentimes, this can warm up the wine and change the sample.

Start by looking at the color of the wine. The stemmed glasses should always be clean and clear, in order for you to see the wine and be able to look at it objectively. While looking at the wine, keep in mind that you will see many different colors. Not all wines are truly red or white. Red isn’t always a perfect red. Older reds tend to be a little lighter in color. White wines may have a yellow, green or even brown tinge. While looking at the color, try and have a white background. This allows you to see the true color. If the wine is purplish in color, this indicates that the wine is young. If it is brownish in color, it means that the wine is an older wine.

Smelling the wine is the next step. Twirl the wine around in the glass, to air it. Take a deep breath through your nostril to smell the fragrance. By swirling the wine, you are releasing many flavors. Keep in mind that many wines have been bottled for many years.

When you smell the wine, you may detect fruit, flower, spice, wood or any earth essence. There are many smells that you may detect. Keep an open mind and remember that no observation is incorrect.

The third step is to evaluate your wine’s taste or palate. Sip a small amount of your wine. Do no swallow. Allow the wine to roll around inside your mouth for a few seconds, allowing you to detect its flavors. You may want to introduce some air into your mouth, to further bring out more aroma and flavor. You will want to note the acidity, which is indicated by the watering of your mouth when acid is present. The tannin and body of the wine and the sweetness are the other qualities to note during the tasting. The tannin refers to the dryness or the drying sensation you taste. The body is indicated by the weight of the wine on your palate. The sweetness of a wine is actually controlled by the amounts of acid, alcohol and tannins present. Generally, the higher the alcohol, the sweeter the wine will taste. Sweet wines can taste fruity or not. Dry wines with low levels of sugar and no noticeable sweetness can still be fruity.

Too much acid can make the wine taste sharp and or tart. Too little acid will make it flat and un refreshing.

Too much alcohol will make it overly sweet, hot and biting as it is swallowed.

Too many tannins will make your mouth pucker. Tannins give wine its body and generally soften as wine ages.

The body of your wine is how it feels in your mouth. Wine will be light, medium or full bodied.

Finally, you will want to evaluate the wines finish. This is the sensation left in your mouth after swallowing. The longer the flavor lingers, the longer the finish.

Generally, wineries will have a receptacle available for wine to be spit out into. You may want to spit out wine because it is unpleasant, or because swallowing numerous wines may begin to cloud your judgment.

Additional tips to keep in mind. Don’t sample more than six to eight glasses per tasting, as many more will tire the palate and cause you to lose focus. Avoid wearing perfume, so that it does not overpower the aromas of the wine. Try and go tasting after eating something, this way you won’t get intoxicated, which could spoil the tasting experience for you.

In no time, you will discover what you like and what you don’t. It will take months, or maybe years to fully detect the subtle variation in all types of wine. For the average wine drinker, this information is a good place to start.

By experiencing wine tasting and exploring as many wineries as you can, you will improve your pallet. It won’t be long before you will be able to identify the many characteristics of wine that you taste. Most likely, you will have a favorite; however, don’t limit yourself because of this. Always try something new that you have not tried…you never know, you may just discover a new wine that you may have passed up.
